Staying at Base X Hostel | Magnetic Island

base x hostel

I was really excited to go to Magnetic Island as I’d heard all about the chilled atmosphere, the Barbie cars and the range of animals. The island was also supposed to be amazing for koala spotting but I didn’t get round to doing this & didn’t actually (unfortunately) see any wild ones.

There are only two hostels on the island and when Base X Hostel offered me a discount* on their rooms, I couldn’t say no.

After saying goodbye to Alice in Airlie Beach, I hopped on the Greyhound Bus and took the ferry over to the island. Base X Hostel had given me such a lovely room: it was an Ocean View cabin with five other people and the view was i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e.

The package I got was Cheap Deal 1 which included:

  • 2 nights accommodation in an 8-bed dorm
  • Return ferry transfers
  • 1 dinner
  • 1 breakfast
  • 1 complimentary welcome cocktail
  • Complimentary snorkel hire

I was incredibly lucky and given only a 6-bed dorm and an extra dinner was also thrown in!

Is the Cheap Deal package worth it?

The package I chose was priced at $108 {now it’s priced at $102} and I would say it’s definitely worth the money! Ferry transfers themselves are roughly $32 (I think) for a return and two nights at Base X Hostel in an 8-bed dorm is about $62. So that’s $94 already and for only $8 extra you get two meals, a welcome drink and snorkel hire – what’s not to love about that?!

What’s Base X Hostel like?

Everyone I know who weren’t able to stay at Base X Hostel all wished they were staying. The fact that it’s right by the sea is a massive bonus and sets such a magical beautiful scene. We had dinner in their bar overlooking and the sea and we all mentioned how we’d usually have to pay hundreds to get a view like this!

What I loved about the hostel apart from the stunning scenery was the pool and hammocks. The pool was right by the beach with a gorgeous view (need I say more?) while just opposite were hammocks to chill out in. I took full advantage of these and either blogged, read or wrote in my journal while relaxing – I loved it!

The staff were all so friendly too and were willing to help out whenever I needed it. The vibe I got, not just from the staff but from the other backpackers there too, was just so cool and chill. It was so refreshing to be at a hostel where people wanted to just have a relaxed but enjoyable time – don’t get me wrong: people were SO up for having a laugh and drinking the night away, but it was such a different atmosphere given that we were on an island and situated right by the sea.

I would highly, highly recommend the hostel to anyone planning on making a trip over and there will be a post on what I got up to on the island too 😉
