If We Were Having Coffee… | Vol. 15

if-we-were-having-coffee-new

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that Oxford really does throw you into the deep end with work. The transition between freshers’ week and term starting was non-existent. Freshers’ at our college started on Tuesday 4th and by Saturday 9th  people were already in the library getting work done (yes, Oxford gave us all work to do during freshers’ *cries*) We’ve barely been here and yet it feels like we have because things are pretty much non-stop here. Everyone is busy with their own work and their own deadlines, tutorials, lectures, classes etc. it really is hard to believe it’s only Week 2!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that after initially believing I had escaped freshers’ flu, I unfortunately come down with a hearty cough and a very runny nose last week. It really sucks and I hate coughing all the time but I kinda liked the hoarse voice haha (doesn’t everyone?) People have been telling me that it technically wasn’t freshers’ flu as it’s no longer freshers’ and I guess that’s kinda true – I mean, I definitely blame Classics’ initiation last Monday evening for my awful voice (let’s not go there). It’s very slowly going but it has lasted well over a week (my tutor even commented on it during my first tutorial…)

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I AM MARRIED! I got engaged (and also pre-engaged – yeah, apparently that’s a thing with me and my hubby) to an awesome guy called Nick who reads English. We have a cute lil marriage going on (we both so happened to wear Jack Wills clothes the day after and he also had a cold – meant to be??) haha… just kidding. I’m not actually married – it’s an Oxford tradition that generally tends to happen in freshers’/first week. Nick actually took the proposal pretty seriously: he sent me a text in Latin (I’m studying it intensively for the next two terms) telling me to go to the Bridge of Sighs at once. Off I went and there he was (wearing a suit too) ready to read me a poem he had written and then he got down on one knee. So cute – how could I say no!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that since this term is my least busiest I’m trying to get involved with as much as possible. This includes kickboxing, orchestra, athletics/cross country, dance fitness, salsa classes, bhangra, yoga, ballet, gymnastics, college netball, college football, Law society, Classics society, drama cuppers (a college competition), Mandarin classes at the language centre and RAG’S LOST (it’s a charity event). Yeah, basically it’s not realistic whatsoever but I’m trying my best to get really involved haha… It’s mainly because I have language work this term and have somehow managed to get off the hook with essays (I’m seriously not looking forward to the next few terms! *cries*) but it means I have a lot more free time than I had anticipated.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that my macbook has been playing up with its storage which has made it incredibly difficult for me to edit footage on iMovie 🙁 I’ve been trying my hardest whenever I get the slightest bit of free time to edit the last Australia vlog but iMovie keeps crashing! Please bear with me as it will eventually get uploaded (as will my week before uni and then freshers’ week!) and they are all videos which I’m sure lots of you will be interested in seeing.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I had a lovely evening last night at a Guest Night (more formal than formal hall which is three times a week) where I invited both my mother and sister down for my mum’s birthday. The food was a lot better than formal hall and it was really nice for my family to enjoy eating in our hall. My sister kept commenting that she felt like she was in Harry Potter 😂

Tell me…

  • If you’re a fresher, how are you finding university so far?
  • Have you ever experienced Freshers’ flu or are you lucky to have escaped it?
  • Does your school/university/work place have any traditions?
  • What societies are you involved with at uni?

Peace and love,
Viola xo

  1. Hey Viola! Glad to see you’re settling in well in uni (…or, at least I hope you are! I know what it feels like to drown in workload but hang in there!) It’s so amazing that you got into Oxford, I hope you enjoy your time there – I’ve been to Oxford once and it’s such a picturesque and quaint town, I love it.

Hmm I’ve never had freshers’ flu when I first came here last year…but that’s probably because I rarely went out for any events during freshers’ week haha. I did fall sick a couple of times during my first year though and it’s never fun to fall sick away from home. No mum around to cook warm food and make sure you eat your meds 🙁 I hope you feel better soon!

I love that you’re being ambitious about joining extracurricular activities! Despite its unrealistic-ness, I think it’s good to think that way rather than the opposite. I was very inactive during my first year and I think that was attributed to my living alone in a foreign country for the first time and preferring safety over any activity, and it remains to this day one of the main things I regretted doing (or rather, not doing) in my first year, so this year I ended up signing up for loads of things too. I’m taking Japanese classes, and am also script writing for a Malaysian society theatre production in February next year. I’m also doing a lot of volunteering work, and I can already kind of foresee me dropping several commitments as classes start to get busier in the near future, but for now I hope to keep myself as occupied as I can when I still have the time and capacity to! It’s a pretty fulfilling experience. 🙂

All the best in your classes! And the proposal under the bridge thing is waaaaaaaaay too cute 🙂

    • Thanks so much for your lovely reply Michelle! If you ever come to Oxford you should definitely come and visit & I can show you around hehe. Aw thank you, it’s clearing up now so I’m feeling a lot better 🙂 Good luck with all of your extra-curricular activities too, they sound amazing! Thanks again so much for your comment; it’s made my day xx
