If we were having coffee, I would tell you that 5th Week has just begun – where has the time gone?! I can’t believe I’ve almost been at Oxford for six weeks and that we’re now halfway through term. It’s absolutely crazy to think about how much has happened but also quite sad to think that time is slowly beginning to fly by.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I really enjoyed myself at the Bonfire Celebrations last night. I haven’t been out to a fireworks display with a bonfire for about eight years so I was really happy to go. A bunch of us from college also ended up going on the dodgems (definitely a highlight!)
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I went to my first ball on Friday. It was at the Oxford Union and the theme was Northern Lights. It was such fun to dress up in floor-length dresses and enjoy the unlimited drinks (I definitely abused this, whoops), live music, food and entertainment. The silent disco was definitely a hit (the last time I was at a silent disco was back in Australia!) and I definitely appreciated the cheese and wine room (who doesn’t love cheese?!). We also got a chance to try out Scottish Ceilidh with live music which was hilarious but really good fun!
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I’ve recently been getting involved with a lot of Access visits by helping out at events. I helped out at an interview workshop for a couple of hours one day and then last Tuesday I had a Year 12 student shadow me for the morning. He came with me to my Latin language class and then we wandered around Oxford and went into the Ashmolean Museum. I then helped out with a tour of New College and I’m hoping to volunteer more next week as there are two more visits coming up! I really enjoy these and Access is something I love. I just love helping and inspiring younger students to apply (not just to Oxford, but generally to university) and being able to answer their questions and demystify everything is so satisfying to me.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that we had our second Bop* of term for Halloween (the theme was Saints & Sinners). My friend and I went as the white swan and black swan from Swan Lake. We decided this so last minute but I loved getting ready for it and dressing up.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that Drama Cuppers** is coming up next week and so much of my time seems to have been dedicated to it. There are two teams from my college and there are two of us who are doing the tech (lighting and sound) and we’re doing it for both of the teams. This means that this past week has been filled with tech meetings with the directors for both teams and also attending both teams’ rehearsals. Busy, busy, busy! Everything is coming together though and it’ll be really nice to celebrate their achievement (I mean, five weeks to put together an entire play?!)
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I had
Netball Initiations Netball Welcome Drinks which involved a lot of drinking and fun and games. It was nice to spend time with the second years and the activities they had planned for us were actually really fun (hiding three pictures of us around their house and making us search for them?!)
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I went on my first Crewdate*** with the Athletics girls. We had a meal with the boys from the Lightweight Rowers team (which involved lots of Oxford drinking games/traditions) and then went to a club together afterwards. It was really good fun and it was a chance to meet more people outside of college.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I had lunch with my Warden on Thursday. We had a tour of his lodgings (they are incredible) and we discovered that his lodgings are actually the oldest continuously inhabited dwelling. How crazy is that? The Warden is the Head of the College and he’s also new this year. He invited all of the freshers to have lunch with him so that he could meet us all personally and so that he could show us around his pad. His dogs are also so lovely(!)
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that my sister came down last week for two days and it was so, so lovely and refreshing! The pace here at Oxford is so incredibly fast and intense and you really are in this Oxford bubble so it was great to have her down and feel a bit more grounded. Being so busy and constantly having things to do here also means that I barely get the chance to talk to any of my family so it was a great chance for a catch up. Saying that, I should really call my mum soon as I haven’t spoken to her in absolutely ages!
P.S. Did you catch my Skydiving video?!
*Bop – a fancy dress/themed college party
**Drama Cuppers – a drama competition between colleges at Oxford University. Each college has a team/teams with 8 actors and they have five weeks to put together a 30-minute play. Crazy!
***Crewdate – girls from one college/sports team with boys from another college/sports team have dinner together (tends to involve lots of drinking) followed by a club night out
- Did you do anything for Bonfire Night?
- What did you do for Halloween? Did you dress up?
- Are you looking forward to anything in the coming weeks?
Peace and love,
